About Rep. Callender

State Representative (Rep.) Jamie Callender is currently serving his third term in the Ohio House of Representatives. He represents the 57th House District, which includes the majority of Lake County. Callender previously served four two-year terms in the Ohio House of Representatives. He serves on the Ohio House Finance Committee.

OEA rank-and-file members from the legislative districts and surrounding areas screened the Ohio Senate and General Assembly candidates based on their stances on the following issues and then issued an endorsement:

  • Support for “Fully Funding the Fair School” funding program to ensure students and educators have the necessary resources and alleviate dependency on local school levies. 
  • Stop state interference in the relationship between educators, parents, and students to ensure students receive the necessary resources and an inclusive, culturally responsible, and truthful education. 
  • Lowering the amount of standardized testing
  • Shifting the state’s report cards away from being based on testing outcomes. 
  • Support for stopping the state from taking over school districts due to low test scores
  • Preserving educators’ pension, so that they have a secure retirement, and we can recruit and retain the educators of tomorrow.
  • Opposition to privatizing educational services to ensure these remain good union jobs.
  • Support for unions and collective bargaining to ensure educators receive fair contracts and have a voice in the workplace. 
  • Opposition to vouchers, voucher expansion programs, and holding charters and private schools to the same standards and scrutiny as public schools if they receive vouchers.
