Ohio School Board District 8

Karen Lloyd

About Karen Lloyd

Karen Lloyd is running for a seat on the State Board of Education for District 8. She is a lifelong resident of Ohio, born and raised in the Ohio Valley. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University and a Master of Science in Education from Franciscan University of Steubenville. Karen has been married to her husband Ron for 33 years, and they are the proud parents of two grown daughters and a wonderful son-in-law. The joy of her life is her two-year-old grandson, who she describes as handsome, loving, and wonderful.

Karen is a retired teacher with 36 years of public elementary education experience. Although she wasn’t quite ready to end her career, she retired on July 1, 2024, to help care for her grandson, who was born with a very rare condition, while his parents work. It was at that time she decided to run for a seat on the State Board of Education (SBOE).

Education has deep roots in Karen’s family, as her father was a public school teacher and principal. As an elementary teacher, she was passionate about working collaboratively with other educators, learning from one another, and using strategies and techniques to improve their teaching practices. Karen served on the Local Professional Development Committee for 26 years and mentored numerous colleagues throughout her career. This sense of collaboration led her to seek more involvement in the union.

Her roles in the Ohio Education Association gave her insight into broader issues in education—issues she hopes to address with the help of legislators and the SBOE. Karen believes that attracting and retaining quality teachers is crucial to maintaining high standards in Ohio’s public schools, and she aims to bring this issue to the forefront and work with her fellow SBOE members to address it during her tenure.

Karen looks forward to the opportunity to serve all communities in Region 8 and is ready for the challenge. She asks for support in the election on November 5, encouraging voters to remember her name, Karen Lloyd, for the State Board of Education.
